Dead But Still Making Money: Marilyn Monroe's Iconic Gold Dress Sells For Whopping $4.8m At Auction

The iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to sing 'happy birthday Mr President' to John F Kennedy has fetched a record-breaking price at auction.

Ripley's Believe It Or Not has snapped up the nude-coloured dress, which features over 2,500 hand-stitched crystals for $4.8 million (£3.87 million).

It was originally given a pre-sale estimate of $3million (£2.42 million) before it went under the hammer at Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles.

It now beats the previous most expensive dress sold at auction, Monroe's white costume from The Seven Year Itch which went for $4.6 million (£3.7 million) in 2011.
