Imagine? Police Command Claim They Can't Identify the Officer That Killed Old Man In Gutter, In Viral Video

Controversy has continued to trail the death of a 65-year-old man, who was pushed into a gutter at Airport bus stop in Ikeja, Lagos.

The state police command said it was studying a video clip of the incident to identify the policemen who perpetuated the act, adding that it had yet to ascertain where the victim’s corpse was taken to.

But eyewitnesses said the victim’s corpse was taken away by policemen, who came in a patrol van.

Two policemen had on Wednesday, October 26, allegedly chased a commercial (danfo) driver to the area.

Punch Metro reports that the old man was waiting at the bus stop to board a bus en route to Iyana Ipaja when the cops pushed him into the gutter in an attempt to apprehend the driver.

One of the policemen was said to have fled the scene immediately he sighted blood gushing out from the victim’s head. The other cop was, however, caught by an angry mob, who beat him up.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said efforts were ongoing to identify the two policemen and the formation to which they belonged.

She said, “We are still investigating and exploring the video. We are studying the video to ascertain if the (uniformed) man is actually a policeman and to ascertain where he is serving.

“We are investigating the case itself to ascertain what occurred. Members of the public should rest assured that if any policeman or policemen are found culpable, they will be dealt with.”

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Kazeem, however, said policemen were at the scene to rescue the two cops, as well as to take the corpse of the victim away. He added that the state police command should not sweep the matter under the carpet.

He said, “I learnt the policemen flagged the danfo driver down at the Oshodi area, but he refused to stop. The policemen chased the driver from Oshodi in another bus. When he stopped at the Airport bus stop for a passenger to disembark, the policemen also got to the bus stop and ran after him. Out of desperation to catch up with the driver, they pushed the elderly man into the drain. The man should be in his late 6os. His corpse was later removed by a police team on patrol. The police authorities will know the policemen that pushed the elderly man.”

A trader at the bus stop, Angela Henry, said the elderly man, bled for about 30 minutes before he died.

The deep cut he had in the head made him to lose a lot of blood. Instead of the crowd to take him to a hospital, they forced the policeman into the drain and told him to carry the man. As he struggled to carry the old man, they attacked him with all kinds of objects. He was covered in blood,” she added.

Another eyewitness, Robiu Adedeji, also said a police team later came to the scene of the incident.

He said, “The second policeman came back to the scene in mufti, thinking that nobody would recognise him. The driver of the bus used for the illegal operation pointed at him and people descended on him too. A police team came in a van and rescued them (the two cops) from the mob. They also took the corpse of the victim away.”
